Sharjah has inaugurated the largest 220 kV substation in its network, located in the airport area of Umm Fannin. This significant project, which cost over Dh500 million, is designed to enhance the energy infrastructure of the emirate and meet the growing energy demands of the city.

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) collaborated with Siemens Energy and the General Projects Company for Mechanical and Electrical Contracting on this project. Hamad Al-Tunaiji, the Director of Energy Transmission at SEWA, emphasized the authority’s ongoing commitment to developing power transmission and distribution networks throughout Sharjah.
The new substation includes four 400 MVA transformers operating at 220/132 kV, along with four 75 MVA transformers at 132/33 kV. This setup provides a total capacity of over 1,200 MW, which will serve essential areas within Sharjah. This expansion not only addresses the city’s increasing energy requirements but also enhances the reliability and flexibility of the electrical grid.
Additionally, the new substation is expected to support Sharjah’s economic and urban growth, ensuring that future energy demands are adequately met. Abdullah Al-Koos, the Deputy Director of Energy Transmission, stated that the opening of this facility marks a significant achievement for SEWA, reaffirming its dedication to providing a modern and dependable energy infrastructure for the emirate.
