Several schools in the UAE have launched a zero-tolerance campaign against vaping, spearheaded by GEMS Education. The initiative includes measures such as random bag checks and integrating anti-vaping education into the curriculum to create safer learning environments free from harmful substances.

Recognizing vaping as a rising global health issue, GEMS Education aims to proactively address its prevalence among young people. The campaign emphasizes the importance of educating students about the dangers of vaping and nicotine addiction.
To enhance enforcement, state-of-the-art vaping detection sensors will be installed in schools, including the new GEMS School of Research and Innovation, which is scheduled to open in August 2025. Lisa Crausby OBE, Group Chief Education Officer at GEMS Education, stated, “Vaping is one of the most pressing health threats facing young people today. We refuse to stand by and let this dangerous trend take hold in our schools.”
Students found with vapes will face significant consequences and will be required to attend follow-up education sessions with counselors to assist them in quitting vaping. Crausby highlighted that the initiative is not solely about enforcement; it also emphasizes education and prevention to ensure students understand the associated risks of vaping.
The vaping detection sensors will be strategically placed in key areas of schools, providing real-time alerts to administrators when vaping is detected. These advanced sensors can distinguish vaping from other airborne particles and have an audio feature that detects specific words, such as ‘help,’ to alert staff of potential concerns.
In addition to random bag checks and sensor monitoring, GEMS Education is intensifying awareness efforts for both students and parents. The schools plan to work with health professionals to support students who are struggling with nicotine addiction. Crausby added, “This initiative goes beyond banning vaping. It is equipping our students with the knowledge and resilience to make better choices for their health.”
GEMS Education is committed to collaborating with parents, educators, and the community to ensure that young people grow up in a clean environment that prioritizes their well-being.
