Sharjah Airport Achieves Carbon Neutral Status for the Fourth Year

Sharjah Airport has successfully renewed its Level 3+ (Neutrality) accreditation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme, administered by Airports Council International (ACI). According to Gulf Today, Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA), highlighted that this achievement showcases the airport’s ongoing commitment to sustainable aviation practices. He noted that maintaining carbon neutrality for four years is in line with the strategic vision of Sharjah and the UAE to promote environmental sustainability.

This milestone is part of Sharjah Airport’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes reducing carbon emissions, implementing green initiatives, and launching projects aimed at offsetting any remaining emissions. The airport is actively contributing to the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy by enhancing energy efficiency, adopting renewable energy sources, and introducing innovative policies that improve operations while maximizing positive environmental impacts.

Ali Salim Al Midfa emphasized that this accomplishment sets a benchmark for other airports in the GCC. The Airport Carbon Accreditation programme is recognized globally for its efforts to help airports reduce CO₂ emissions and achieve carbon neutrality. He reiterated the airport’s dedication to sustainability, motivating the team to intensify their environmental responsibility initiatives in the aviation sector.

Sharjah Airport aims to serve as a role model for other airports, encouraging them to pursue similar sustainability goals and contribute to global climate action. The ACA programme, established by ACI Europe in 2009 and expanded to the Asia-Pacific region in 2011, helps airports measure, manage, and reduce carbon emissions through a structured seven-tier accreditation system.

Sharjah Airport began its carbon accreditation journey in 2014, becoming one of the first airports in the region to join the programme. It started at Level 1 (Mapping), systematically mapping carbon emissions from sources under its direct control and undergoing independent third-party emissions verification.
