Dubai Metro’s New Blue Line Station Set to Become World’s Tallest

When it opens in 2029, the first station of the Dubai Metro Blue Line will be the tallest metro station in the world, standing at 74 metres. This station, named Emaar Properties, will be located in the Dubai Creek Harbour area. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, described the station as an “architectural icon” during the foundation stone laying ceremony held on Monday.

The Blue Line will extend the Dubai Metro network by 30 kilometers and will include 14 stations. The construction of this project is set to cost Dh18 billion, equivalent to approximately $4.9 billion. Once completed, the Dubai Metro will have a total length of 131 kilometers, incorporating 78 stations.

Shinjuku Station in Tokyo holds the title of the world’s busiest railway station, serving an average of 2.7 million passengers daily. Certified by the Guinness World Records in 2022, Shinjuku Station has been in operation for over 140 years and is a key hub for rail traffic connecting central, eastern, and western Tokyo, as well as intercity and commuter rail services.

Grand Central Terminal in New York City features the largest number of platforms, with a total of 44 spread over 19 hectares. The station operates approximately 660 trains and accommodates around 125 000 commuters each day. Opened in 1913, Grand Central is a vital part of New York’s history and has appeared in numerous TV shows and films.

The highest railway station in the world is Tanggula Railway Station, located at an elevation of 5,068 meters in Tibet. Opened in 2006, it serves the Qinghai-Tibet railway, which is the highest train line globally, running from Qinghai to Lhasa. Although the station is unmanned and not a regular stop, trains occasionally halt there to allow others to pass.

Admiralteyskaya station in St Petersburg, Russia, boasts the tallest metro escalator in the world at 68.6 meters, featuring 770 steps. This station, completed in 2011, is situated 86 meters underground, making it one of the deepest stations in the city.

Hongyancun Station in Chongqing, China, is recognized as the deepest metro station, lying 113 meters below ground. It serves Line 9 of the Chongqing Rail Transit and features extensive escalator systems and lifts to transport passengers, with some platforms requiring up to 10 minutes to reach from the entry point.
