Port of NEOM Receives Saudi Arabia’s First Automated Cranes Ahead of 2026 Launch

The Port of NEOM has reached a significant milestone in its development by receiving Saudi Arabia’s first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes. This advancement is a crucial step toward establishing the port as one of the world’s most advanced and sustainable trade hubs, as it prepares for the opening of Terminal 1 by 2026.

The arrival of these automated cranes reinforces the port’s strategic position along the Red Sea’s East–West global trade route. Sean Kelly, the Managing Director of Port of NEOM, highlighted this achievement as a “tangible milestone” for the region’s industrial and trade ecosystem. He emphasized that this initiative not only accelerates industrial growth in northwest Saudi Arabia but also sets a new standard for performance, efficiency, and innovation.

Progress on the port’s infrastructure is advancing swiftly, with the completion of a 900-meter quay wall and the deepening of the access channel to 18.5 meters. This depth will allow the port to accommodate some of the world’s largest vessels that transit through the Suez Canal. Additionally, Terminal 1 will include fully automated container transport systems, which are expected to enhance port efficiency and strengthen supply chain resilience across Saudi Arabia and beyond.

In conjunction with the automation rollout, there are also significant investments being made in workforce development. A specialized training program for remote crane operators is currently in progress, with ten participants from the local Tabuk region undergoing a two-year course in technical operations. This initiative includes Saudi women stepping into high-tech logistics roles, further promoting inclusivity in the workforce.
