Dubai is making significant improvements to its stormwater infrastructure with a new project in Dubai South. Dubai Municipality has signed a strategic agreement worth AED 150 million with Dubai South to construct an advanced drainage system in the residential district of the area.

This initiative is part of the larger Tasreef project, which includes the construction of a new secondary stormwater tunnel. This tunnel will connect Dubai South’s drainage network to the city’s deep tunnel system via Expo Road, aiming to enhance the overall efficiency of stormwater management.
The upgrade is intended to mitigate flood risks, safeguard public infrastructure, and bolster urban resilience. It aligns with Dubai’s long-term vision for smart and sustainable development, supporting the goals outlined in the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.
Tasreef, which is spearheaded by Dubai Municipality, is a comprehensive AED 30 billion program aimed at expanding stormwater coverage throughout the emirate by the year 2033. Once completed, the new system is expected to manage over 20 million cubic meters of water daily, increasing drainage capacity by 700 percent.
Previous phases of the Tasreef project have already improved stormwater infrastructure in locations such as Al Maktoum City, Expo City, and the Airport District.
