Sharjah Launches Smart Traffic Signals to Enhance Traffic Flow and Safety

Sharjah has introduced a new set of smart traffic signals that utilize technology such as sensors and detectors to monitor traffic volumes and adjust signal timings accordingly. This advancement allows vehicles to pass through multiple green lights without stopping, as long as they maintain a speed between 40 km/h and 50 km/h.

The smart signals are part of the “Green Traffic” initiative, aimed at reducing harmful emissions caused by frequent stopping and starting. This system also helps to limit congestion, especially during peak hours, and reduces wait times for drivers. Additionally, it enhances road safety for both pedestrians and motorists, minimizing the risks associated with uncontrolled pedestrian crossings.

Engineer Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), remarked that this initiative is part of a broader package of smart projects designed to improve the emirate’s transport sector. He emphasized the environmental advantages of the new system, which aligns with Sharjah’s sustainability goals and initiatives to create a greener future.
