WeRide, a leader in autonomous driving technology and publicly traded on NASDAQ under the ticker WRD, has announced the launch of fully driverless Robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi. This marks the first deployment of its kind in the Middle East. Beginning this quarter, a fleet of WeRide’s Robotaxis will operate on public roads without a safety driver, representing a significant step forward for smart mobility in the region.

WeRide will also broaden its Robotaxi service coverage to include Al Maryah Island, known as the city’s financial hub and home to the Abu Dhabi Global Market, and Al Reem Island, a lively residential area. These new areas enhance WeRide’s existing Robotaxi network, which has been operational in Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes leading to Zayed International Airport since 2021.
According to ZAWYA, Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International at WeRide, stated, “WeRide makes history as the first company to pilot fully driverless Robotaxis in the Middle East region, showcasing our autonomous leadership in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments.” She emphasized that the expansion into high-demand areas like Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands brings smart mobility solutions to a broader audience in the Middle East. Li noted that these efforts illustrate WeRide’s technological maturity and progress towards the mass commercialization of Robotaxis.
WeRide is pushing forward with its global expansion, considering the UAE as a vital market. In July 2023, the company secured the UAE’s first national license for self-driving vehicles, which allows for the testing and operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads across the country. Furthermore, in December 2024, WeRide and Uber initiated a ride-hailing partnership in Abu Dhabi, creating the largest commercial Robotaxi service outside of the US and China.
Commercial driverless rides and additional service areas will be rolled out starting summer 2025, contingent upon receiving regulatory approval.
WeRide is recognized as a pioneering force in the autonomous driving sector, operating in over 30 cities across 10 countries and holding driverless permits in various locations, including China, the UAE, Singapore, France, and the US. The company utilizes its adaptable WeRide One platform to provide autonomous driving solutions across mobility, logistics, and sanitation sectors. WeRide was also featured in Fortune Magazine’s 2024 “The Future 50” list.
