Kapsch TrafficCom has been awarded a significant contract for the implementation and maintenance of five tunnels by the Sharjah Roads & Transport Authority (SRTA) in the United Arab Emirates. This project aims to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance for the tunnel systems, which connect the economic hub of Khorfakkan to the rest of the Emirate through the Hajar Mountains.

The tunnels are expected to significantly reduce driving time from the port city of Khorfakkan to the capital, Sharjah, decreasing the duration from over 100 minutes to approximately 45 minutes. Starting in May 2025, Kapsch TrafficCom will oversee the project, which has a contract value in the double-digit millions and spans five years, including three years of delivery and two years of subsequent maintenance. There is also an option to add AI-driven advanced traffic management systems in the future.
Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, expressed pride in being selected by SRTA for this project, stating that the new system will improve traffic safety, air quality, and potentially save lives through features such as incident detection and firefighting systems. Michael Weber, Head of Sales EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, highlighted the project’s importance for enhancing the company’s regional presence and noted that the technology being deployed has seen successful implementations in other infrastructure projects in Europe and the USA.
Dr. Mohsin Bin Balwan, Director of the Traffic Engineering Department at SRTA, remarked that this project reflects their commitment to developing robust transportation infrastructure that supports sustainable growth in the Emirate. He emphasized that using advanced technologies from global companies like Kapsch TrafficCom aims to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors. The project is a crucial step towards Sharjah’s vision for an AI-driven intelligent transport ecosystem, with real-time monitoring and response capabilities that enhance public safety.
The implementation will involve various mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the tunnels, including an Advanced Traffic Management System, Tunnel Ventilation System, Emergency Telephone System, and more. Notably, the Al Multaqa tunnel, which is 2.7 kilometers long, will be the longest covered tunnel in the Middle East, playing a vital role in alleviating congestion and improving travel reliability for trade and tourism while ensuring driver safety.
