Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has reached a significant milestone in upgrading its nol payment system, completing 40% of the project. This upgrade will shift the current card-based system to advanced account-based ticketing (ABT) technology, making public transport payments more seamless and modern.

The Dh550 million project is divided into three phases and is planned for completion by the third quarter of 2026. In the first phase, RTA is focusing on creating digital accounts linked to existing nol cards. The second phase will introduce a new generation of nol cards equipped with advanced technology, while the final phase will enable payments through multiple methods, including bank cards and digital wallets.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, explained that the system will bring several new features for users. People will be able to link nol cards to their digital accounts, manage them via smartphone wallets, and even use QR codes to purchase tickets. The upgraded system will also support flexible fare structures and allow for automatic balance top-ups through banking services.
Additionally, the updated nol system will extend its usage beyond public transport. Users will be able to make purchases at retail outlets and digital platforms across the UAE, similar to how bank cards work.
Since its launch in 2009, the nol card has become an essential tool for public transport in Dubai. Over the years, RTA has introduced various enhancements, including student discounts and tourist-friendly promotional cards. With this latest upgrade, RTA aims to further promote Dubai as a leader in smart mobility solutions.
