Dubai Future Foundation Funds 24 Research Projects Across 13 Universities

The Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) has announced funding for 24 research projects from 13 universities, aiming to enhance Dubai’s status as a leading city in future technologies. This initiative, part of the Dubai Research, Development and Innovation Grant Initiative (RDI), was launched in September 2024 under the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of DFF.

The selected research projects were chosen from a competitive pool of 374 innovative proposals submitted by 41 universities and research institutes. The RDI initiative prioritizes research in cognitive cities and health and life sciences, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic systems technologies to facilitate advancements in these fields.

Khalifa Al Qama, the Executive Director of Dubai Future Labs at DFF, highlighted Dubai’s commitment to empowering researchers and fostering innovation. He noted that the significant response from institutions across the emirate underscores the role of the Dubai RDI Grant in promoting groundbreaking research and aligns with Dubai’s vision to lead in scientific and technological advancements.

The funded projects come from a diverse range of institutions, including the University of Dubai, Canadian University Dubai, Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Wollongong in Dubai, American University in Dubai, and others.

Dr. Sreejith Balasubramanian from Middlesex University Dubai expressed his excitement about leading a project that uses AI and digital twin technology to help SMEs in manufacturing. He thanked the Dubai RDI Initiative for supporting this transformative effort.

Additionally, Dr. Firuz Kamalov from Canadian University Dubai remarked on the initiative’s role in advancing health and AI research. He conveyed his eagerness to contribute to the city’s research ecosystem, reflecting the exceptional talent present in Dubai.

Dr. Hamzah Alkhazaleh from the University of Dubai discussed his work on a project that aims to detect Alzheimer’s disease early using innovative technologies. He emphasized the importance of AI in providing effective healthcare solutions and improving patient outcomes through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Finally, Prof. Mai ElBarachi from the University of Wollongong in Dubai expressed enthusiasm about leading a project focused on enhancing the electric vehicle ecosystem. This initiative integrates advanced AI technologies to support sustainable mobility in line with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy.
