Abu Dhabi Enhances Mental Health Support in Schools

Abu Dhabi is set to significantly upgrade mental health support in schools, transitioning from a traditional counselling model to a comprehensive system that integrates wellbeing into all aspects of student life. This shift is mandated by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), which requires every school to establish a dedicated student wellbeing strategy and mental health policy.

According to Khaleej Times, Sylvie Wald, the Education Policy Office Director at ADEK, explained that mental health was previously addressed under general counselling services. The new approach emphasizes early detection, structured support, and increased community awareness. One critical issue identified is food bullying, where students reportedly coerced others into buying food or stealing their cards. Wald indicated that schools need to focus not only on food safety but also on fostering a positive environment during lunch breaks.

To combat food bullying and promote healthy eating, ADEK’s new policy includes measures to identify and assist students facing eating disorders and related challenges. Wald mentioned that if a teacher observes a student with eating difficulties, they are required to address these concerns with both the student and their parents on the same day. Furthermore, the student behaviour policy promotes a ‘positive behaviour model’ to manage student conduct, prioritizing preventive measures over punitive actions.

Another important aspect of the policy is enhancing environmental wellbeing through the creation of calming spaces in classrooms. These designated areas will allow students experiencing distress to relax and regain their composure. Wald noted that providing tools for students to regulate their emotions is essential.

ADEK aims to ensure that schools offer proactive support during vulnerable times, as students’ mental health may decline during critical phases, such as exams or following traumatic events like the loss of a teacher or peer. The policy also reinforces Abu Dhabi’s strong commitment to child protection, aligning with the Dama Al Aman programme initiated by the Early Childhood Authority.
