In the UAE, the Ramadan Crescent Moon Sighting Committee confirmed the start of Ramadan on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday evening. For the first time, the UAE deployed AI-powered drones to assist with the moon sighting, marking a significant technological advancement in the process. The International Astronomical Center also captured the first crescent image from Abu Dhabi.

Australia was among the first to declare Ramadan’s start, based on lunar observations. Grand Mufti Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, in coordination with Islamic councils, announced Saturday as the beginning of the holy month, with Taraweeh prayers taking place on Friday night.

In contrast, countries like Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines announced that Ramadan would begin on Sunday, March 2, as the crescent moon was not sighted. Similarly, India and Morocco confirmed Sunday as the first day of Ramadan due to the absence of moon sightings.

Meanwhile, cloudy weather in Saudi Arabia made observations difficult in regions like Sudair and Tumair. Despite the challenges, Saudi Arabia confirmed March 1 as the start of Ramadan. Neighboring Gulf countries, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, also aligned their calendars with March 1.

Global leaders have extended their Ramadan greetings. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the shared values of reflection, compassion, and unity during the holy month, wishing Muslims a peaceful Ramadan.

As Ramadan begins, Muslims worldwide unite in fasting, prayer, and community gatherings, embracing the spirit of charity and renewal.
