Residents in Sharjah’s Al Tawoon, Al Majaz, Al Khan, and Al Mamzar areas are finding their daily commutes much smoother thanks to a newly opened traffic diversion on Al Tawoon Street. The route, aimed at easing long-standing congestion, has drastically reduced travel times, cutting what once took 20 minutes down to just three or four minutes.

Previously, the single exit from Al Ittihad Road into Al Tawoon Street caused major traffic bottlenecks, especially in the evenings, with vehicles backing up all the way to nearby landmarks like Nesto Supermarket. Drivers often had to take detours and U-turns, adding to the chaos. Now, the new diversion has resolved the gridlock, offering a faster and more seamless commute for thousands of residents.
Ahmed bin Najeeb, a resident of Delma Tower, shared his relief in an interview with *Khaleej Times*. He explained how his commute from Al Quoz, which previously took over an hour, has become significantly quicker. “Now, I can get home and relax without wasting time in traffic,” he said.
Others, like Abdullah Alshami of Al Khan Tower, also expressed gratitude. After years of dealing with frustrating delays, Alshami said he can now reach his building in just minutes after entering Sharjah, calling it a major improvement to his daily routine.
The benefits extend beyond saving time. For Sameer Khan from Central Tower, the smoother traffic flow has reduced his fuel costs. He noted that he no longer wastes 20 to 30 minutes idling in traffic, which has made a noticeable difference to his monthly expenses.
Residents are hopeful that this success will inspire similar solutions in other congested areas of Sharjah. “The city is growing, and traffic challenges will only increase. This is a great start, but more needs to be done,” said Najeeb.
The new diversion is a big step forward for Sharjah’s residents, bringing both convenience and cost savings, while improving the overall quality of life for commuters.
