UAE Unveils First Stem Cells Research Centre to Lead in Regenerative Medicine

The UAE has taken a major step toward advancing healthcare by launching its first Stem Cells Research Centre. The facility, based at United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, is part of the country’s ambitious plan to lead in regenerative medicine and develop innovative medical solutions.

The centre, which opened today, was inaugurated in the presence of Zaki Nusseibeh, cultural adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed and chancellor of the university. It aims to train a new generation of Emirati scientists, enhance research into stem cell therapy, and improve patient care.

Prof Fatma Al Jasmi, acting dean of the university’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences, emphasized the significance of the centre, stating that it aligns with the UAE’s vision to promote research innovation and solidify its position as a global leader in the field.

The centre will also focus on expanding manufacturing capabilities and forming international partnerships to strengthen the stem cell market in the Middle East. This market is forecast to grow significantly, from $711.8 million in 2024 to $1.3 billion by 2030.

Stem cell therapy, also known as regenerative medicine, uses laboratory-grown stem cells to repair damaged tissues and treat diseases. This approach has been instrumental in various treatments, such as organ transplants and cancer therapies.

The UAE has already made strides in this area. In 2022, the country achieved a milestone by completing a bone-marrow transplant using cryogenically preserved cells. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre continues to focus on using stem cells for organ regeneration and treating conditions like Type 1 diabetes and advanced organ failure.

Dr. Yendry Ventura, CEO of Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre, previously told The National about his vision for a future where patients no longer face long waits for organ donors. “It could mean the end of patients getting as far as organ failure,” he said.

With this new centre, the UAE is positioning itself as a key player in cutting-edge medical research and treatment.
