The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Khalifa University of Science and Technology have initiated a significant marine research mission off the coast of Abu Dhabi. This mission is being conducted aboard Jaywun, the region’s most advanced marine research vessel, equipped with cutting-edge technology and six laboratories aimed at supporting environmental exploration and climate change mitigation efforts.

Launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of EAD’s Board of Directors, Jaywun represents the UAE’s first dedicated research vessel. The current expedition is a part of a broader effort established under a multilateral Memorandum of Understanding involving EAD, OceanX, Bayanat, and M42, which commenced with the Ocean Explorer traveling across the UAE in December 2023.
The mission aims to assess the impacts of climate change on the unique marine ecosystem of the Arabian Gulf. By mapping the seafloor, the researchers hope to uncover vital insights into the region’s marine life and underwater features along Abu Dhabi’s coast. Future endeavors on Jaywun will extend this research, including planned studies off the coast of Fujairah.
Ahmed Al Hashmi, Executive Director of the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at EAD, highlighted that Jaywun facilitates in-depth research on marine ecosystems using advanced equipment, ensuring high-quality data collection and analysis. He stated, “Currently, in partnership with Khalifa University, we are studying marine sediments for the first time to assess the impact of climate change on the Arabian Gulf.” Al Hashmi further explained that the outcomes of this research will be instrumental in guiding future sustainability and conservation initiatives aimed at protecting vital marine ecosystems.
The primary goal of the sediment survey is to investigate the waters of the UAE and establish an initial baseline of sediment data from offshore Abu Dhabi. This analysis will provide researchers aboard Jaywun with essential insights into both historical and recent changes in the marine environment. Additionally, the research will examine sediment movement, the effects of storm events, and the overall health of oceanic ecosystems. Insights gained from marine chemistry and sediments formed under extreme conditions will also contribute to understanding future climate scenarios.
