Federal National Council (FNC) members have called for immediate legislative action to accelerate the global shift to clean energy, highlighting the urgent need to address climate challenges.
Speaking at the Legislators Forum 2025, organised by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, FNC Member and Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, noted that 2024 recorded the highest-ever temperatures. He stressed that climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement require stronger commitments, revealing a gap highlighted during the global stocktake at COP28.
Dr. Al Nuaimi explained that the COP28 summit introduced an ambitious roadmap for clean energy transition and bolstered financial frameworks to support these efforts. He encouraged legislators worldwide to draft laws that promote renewable energy and global partnerships, urging them to use the current momentum to secure a sustainable future.
Meera Sultan Al Suwaidi, another FNC member, shared insights into the UAE’s progress in renewable energy. She attributed the success to the nation’s ambitious Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to make clean energy 50% of the national energy mix. Al Suwaidi also highlighted the FNC’s role in advancing environmental governance through parliamentary oversight and initiatives supporting clean energy projects.
Al Suwaidi outlined future steps, including expanding green hydrogen production, launching a regional carbon trading platform, and creating a national climate innovation fund. She stressed the importance of international parliamentary cooperation to ensure a successful energy transition.
The forum also appointed Al Suwaidi as Rapporteur of the Legislators Forum 2025. She will present the forum’s recommendations to the IRENA General Assembly on 13th January, focusing on enhancing renewable energy laws and achieving global climate goals.
