Dubai has achieved a significant milestone in its push for sustainable energy by completing its first-ever LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) bunkering operation. This landmark initiative, carried out by the Dubai Ports Authority, part of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), highlights the emirate’s commitment to its Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050.
The operation was conducted at Dubai Harbour for the cruise ship ‘Costa Smeralda,’ marking the first instance of LNG bunkering in the region. This achievement not only supports Dubai’s efforts to reduce the maritime sector’s carbon footprint but also strengthens its position as a global leader in sustainable maritime operations.
His Excellency Nasser Al Neyadi, Group CEO of PCFC, emphasized that this accomplishment reflects the Authority’s dedication to building a sustainable maritime ecosystem. He noted that such initiatives align with Dubai’s goal of generating 100% of its energy capacity from clean sources by 2050.
Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, CEO of the Dubai Ports Authority, explained that the Authority has developed a comprehensive Fuel Bunkering Regulation to guide port operators and LNG suppliers. This regulation adheres to global safety and environmental standards, ensuring efficient and sustainable operations. He added that expanding alternative fuel options, like LNG, is key to enhancing Dubai’s global status in the maritime industry.
This operation aligns with the UAE’s broader climate goals and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) carbon reduction targets. As Dubai continues to focus on innovation and environmental stewardship, initiatives like LNG bunkering are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future for the maritime sector.
