UAE Overstayers Warned: Visa Amnesty Ends Soon

Illegal residents in the UAE have been urged to take advantage of the ongoing visa amnesty program before it ends on December 31, 2024. The amnesty, launched on September 1, was initially set to close on October 31 but was extended to provide more time for individuals to regularise their status or return home without penalties.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), emphasized the importance of acting quickly. As Khaleej Times reported, he said, “The amnesty is going to end, and overstayers who have not yet regularised their status should utilise the remaining time of the grace period to rectify their residency violations.”

Once the amnesty period concludes, strict measures will be enforced. Major General Salah Al Qamzi, assistant director general of the Violators and Foreigners Follow-up Sector, announced that intensified inspection campaigns will begin immediately. He assured that the authorities will implement the laws with fairness and transparency to ensure community safety.

Officials also called for community support to spread awareness about the program. Al Marri highlighted the success of those who have already benefited, stating that many have secured jobs and improved their lives. However, he expressed concern over individuals who remain doubtful about the initiative’s legitimacy, urging them to trust the process and take action.

The humanitarian aspect of the amnesty was also underscored. Al Marri shared stories of families and children who faced challenges but found relief through the program. He praised his team for connecting individuals with their embassies and supporting families in need, ensuring that children received healthcare and vaccines despite their undocumented status.

With less than two weeks remaining, authorities stress the importance of acting now. “People who do not avail of this amnesty will blame themselves in the future,” Al Marri warned. “Come, regularise your status, get rid of fines, and start a new life.”
